Anthony Bags Top Job

Anthony Bags Top Job

Local barnsley lad who was on the dole for a year is to become new TESCO supermarket manager.

After being referred to BEST, Anthony Sydney, 25, was offered a four-week work placement with TESCO on West Street in Hoyland in the summer. He was taken on full time in January after impressing his bosses.  Anthony has now been fast-tracked on to the company's management training course, meaning he will soon be running his own store. Anthony is also set to receive a higher education award from Manchester Met University.

Anthony had been on a college course and had wanted to become a joiner to follow in his father's footsteps, but dropped out when the recession hit. "My dad inspired me. He'd been an engineer and then at 44 he decided to retrain as a joiner. I thought if he can do it, so can I. I loved what I was doing but I knew I couldn't keep paying for the course if there was no job at the end, so I had to drop out. I spent 12 months trying to find a new job. It was really demoralising. Getting this job has changed my life around. Just a few months ago I thought I'd never find a job. Now I'm on the way to running my own store!".

The sky is the limit

After a year of searching Anthony has finally found the job that will put him on the road to success – and he has vowed to take full advantage of the opportunity. “Now I’ve got this chance I’m hungry for success. I’m going to work hard and within the next two years I want to be a store manager. I know I can do it.”
